Leonor’s Mexican Vegetarian: A First Taste, A Legacy, A Love Letter

Some places feed you.

Others hold you.

Leonor’s Mexican Vegetarian in North Hollywood is the kind of place that does both.

This wasn’t just another Food Review Friday for me — it was my first long-form YouTube food story, and I knew from the moment I walked through the door that this space deserved more than a quick bite and a rating. Leonor’s carries history, heart, and generations of love in every dish.

A Family Legacy That Lives On

Leonor’s has been part of the North Hollywood community for decades, built by a woman whose spirit still fills the room. Leonor, the heart behind the restaurant, passed away in April 2025, but her presence is undeniable. You feel it in the walls, in the warmth of the welcome, and in the way her family continues to carry her vision forward with pride and care.

This isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a living legacy.

Being invited to sit, eat, and listen to the owners share their story was an honor. Their openness, strength, and love for their mother shaped the entire experience. It’s rare to find a place where the food and the story are so deeply connected.

The Food: Comfort, Flavor, and Intention

Everything I tried felt intentional — like recipes passed down, perfected, and protected.

The Works Quesadilla

This one stopped me in my tracks.

Mushrooms, spinach, and seasoned chicken came together in a way that felt bold but comforting. The flavors didn’t fight each other; they built. This was the dish that made me pause, smile, and fully understand why Leonor’s has lasted as long as it has.

Joy’s Golden Nugget Sandwich

Light, satisfying, and quietly powerful.

Leonor’s doesn’t rely on heavy salt; they let the ingredients speak. The avocado, cheese, and chicken created a balanced, easy-to-love sandwich — the kind you crave without realizing it until it’s gone.

Mushroom, Spinach, and Cheese Empanada

If you love mushrooms, this one is non-negotiable.

Earthy, warm, and deeply comforting, this empanada felt like something made with patience and care. One bite told me everything I needed to know about the kitchen behind it.

Why This Story Mattered

Food Review Friday has always been about more than food for me. It’s about people, culture, and community — and Leonor’s embodies all three.

Sharing this story felt necessary. Not just to highlight great vegetarian Mexican food, but to honor a woman’s legacy and a family’s dedication to keeping it alive.
