The Pizza Class That Reminded Me What Community Feels Like
There are restaurants you enjoy… and then there are restaurants that become part of your story. For me, Donna Jean has never been “just dinner.” It’s been community. It’s been comfort. It’s been one of those rare places that feels like it sees you back.
I still remember when they first opened in Los Angeles in 2022. At the time, I was living in Northridge, finding my footing in the city, building my creativity, and navigating everything that comes with chasing a new chapter. And in the midst of all of that, Donna Jean became one of the few places that grounded me — a space where I could breathe, settle, and enjoy food made with intention.
Plant-based. Seasonal. Rustic. Comforting. Their words, yes, but also exactly how it felt to sit down at one of their tables.
When I eventually moved to Sherman Oaks, Donna Jean was one of the main reasons the neighborhood felt right. It wasn’t just having a restaurant close by. It was having this restaurant close by — a place that carried the warmth of community and the creativity of food made with real care. It became part of my weekly rhythm, my reset moments, my little sanctuary between the noise of life.
And somehow, life kept weaving our paths together in the sweetest ways.
When they were featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, I ended up on that episode too — a full-circle moment I’ll never forget. Watching a place you love get that kind of national spotlight, and being part of that moment, felt surreal. Alignment is real. Good people and good energy always find a way to meet.
Over the years, I’ve watched Donna Jean grow and pour into both locations — Los Angeles and San Diego — with the same heart and intention that made me fall in love with them from the very beginning. Their food speaks for itself, but the feeling? That’s what keeps people coming back. The comfort. The familiarity. The sense of home.
This week, I joined their Pizza 101 class — and yet again, they reminded me why they mean so much to me. A room full of strangers laughing, learning, slowing down for a moment to create something with their hands. Dinner, drinks, a take-home kit… but also something deeper: connection.
That has always been Donna Jean’s gift.
They serve food that nourishes the body, but they create experiences that nourish the spirit. And that is rare.
Supporting them over the years has never been transactional. It has felt like honoring a place that has held so many moments of joy, comfort, and community for me. From 2022 until now, they have been woven into my life in a way that feels almost poetic — a reminder that the most meaningful places aren’t always the loudest ones. Sometimes they’re simply the ones that feel like home.
I’m grateful for the memories.
I’m grateful for the meals.
And I’m grateful for this restaurant that continues to show up with heart, intention, and soul.
Here’s to Donna Jean.
To their story.
To their impact.
And to all the people who will walk through their doors and feel that same spark of belonging… just like I did. 🫀
